Palm Beach, Aruba

Something that is both exciting as well as unnerving about travel is dealing with the unfamiliar. You are on foreign territory and dealing with new surroundings, experiences, and equipment. Such was the case while renting a car in Aruba. The first day passed with no incident, but on the second, as we were approaching one of the many roundabouts on the island, we discovered that the breaks were faulty. My dad pressed first gently, then aggressively, until his foot was hitting the ground, but there was no response. So we lurched into the oncoming traffic circle with no sign of stopping. Luckily, there was no one in it at the time and he managed to screech to a halt by hugging the curb. In the end, no one was hurt, but it’s also the closest I’ve come to real life Fast and the Furious.

Pro-Tip: If you know anything about cars and have a choice in which one is rented to you, choose a model that you know is dependable and safe.
