For some people, the ocean is a source of life, nourishment, and serenity. For me, it was a source of destruction. While walking a plank between a smaller boat and a larger boat in the Aegean Sea, a gust of wind blew my bag from my body where it dropped 20 feet to the deep blue sea. In this process, my camera and phone were both fried. Luckily, we were able to fish it out and the memory card of my camera remained intact so the 4,000 photos that had already been taken on the trip weren’t lost. Nevertheless, it was still a rough couple of days afterwards. It is an incredibly naked and vulnerable feeling to be traveling in a foreign country with no cell phone as a millennial. I feel like a jerk complaining about this, but whatever, it was still traumatic.
Pro-tip: Make sure that your bag is securely strapped to your body before walking the plank between boats. Or just stay on dry land altogether. The ocean is overrated.
